Land Arts of the American West

In the Fall of 2002 as a grad student in the University of New Mexico’s MFA program, I participated in the Land Arts of the American West program. The central theme of the program was to investigate the ways in which humans have interacted with natural environments of the southwestern United States from prehistory to the present day. Experiences during this program set the stage for my exploration of performance art and themes of danger, obsession and the disconnect between humanity and nature in post-industrial civilization. The site-specific work, Mudquilt, became source material for further investigations in the studio, resulting in the pieces, Events in Nature and Painting and Painting Performance.
